And now to the explanation: I saw the "useless" variable, removed it. Then noticed that the parameter was passed by (non-const) reference, and re-introduced it. And of course forgot that there was a initilization in the beginning. I hope this is the explantion for all those sudden crashes that came up suspiciously soon after the introduction of lyx::pos_type...
