That's what I had in mind. Isn't this the infamous twoside options bug
of geometry? It should have been fixed a long time ago. Geometry.dtx
says:

What version of geometry.sty do you have.
I do not want to add code to workaround bugs which have been fixed two
years ago (actually it got fixed because I reported it on behalf of a
LyX user).
