That's not the tricky part.

Is  a(x+y)  a function called a with parameter x+y  or is it  a*(x+y)?
It's not clear without context...

I don't like guessing in such cases too much, so I'll probably insist on
putting some marker there  (maybe some "invisible multiplication" that does
not show up in printout and that is non-intrusive on screen).
