I disagree. How is the XForms text widget a better editor than LyX ?
For example, you cannot use undo in there (Maybe it possible to implement
undo, but the in preamble dialog there is no undo).
Also, the keyboard bindings are different than in the main LyX window.

However, the most important problem is ease of changing the text in ERT inset.
Suppose I have some text that contain an ERT inset:
   Blah blah \foo blah
and I want to change \foo to \fo. In Herbert's inset, I need to use the
mouse to click on the inset in order to open the dialog, and after changing
\foo to \fo I need to press M-o to close the dialog.
Compare it with the latex font property of 1.1.6 where I didn't need any
extra keypresses or mouse usage. It is also easy to change the text in a
current ERT inset in an "inline" state.

I do have the following idea on improving the current ERT inset:
(recall that the ERT inset has 3 states: open, collapsed, and inline)
When you press ctrl+l, an inline inset is generated. If the user presses
enter or C-enter, than the inset automatically changes it state to "open".
