I don't know about you, but when I'm copying text from lyx to other
applications, I don't need to convert pictures to ASCII art.
Besides, you don't need to do the conversion while you do the selection,
only when you press the middle mouse button in the external application
(actually, isn't there a problem of implementing this in XForms ?)

I think that it is important to have the ability to do the copying without
pressing ctrl+C, like any other X application.
