where are my betas going???

OK, this is out of hand.  Lyx is now eating my betas.  My older alphas 
are surviving, but the new ones of those die, too. 

They display on the screen, but come out as latin characters in 
postscript preview.  If the file is opened and closed, they become 
latin on screen, too.
