Ok... next try to convince you:
If you select something outside mathed and type a simple letter, the
selected part gets overwritten by the letter.
If you select something and type a C-M, the selected part gets
overwritten by a math inset.
This is consistent so far. Now, providing the contents of the old selection
within the math inset is a gimmick (which I needed desperately a few years
ago when table import failed). So this is a _small_ inconsistency.
Within mathed the behaviour is fully consistent with things like math-insert
sqrt etc. as I explained earlier.

I want to get rid of different behaviour inside and outside mathed as far
as possible and this looks like a good compomise and adds a feature I
wanted to have some time but I don't really care about anymore.
