I don't know if this has been discussed before, so sorry if I step on
old ground.
I always wondered why LyX is only supporting one LaTeX space command,
the protected space (LaTeX: ~) (protected-space-insert). Reading the
UserGuide and with no LaTeX knowledge, one could think that this is the
general solution to put behind each and every abbreviation dot. But if
you use a lot of abbreviations in one sentence, you get linebreak
problems.
The LaTeX solution is "\<space>" [force normal space] which is much
more used as ~ in the LaTeX world AFAIK. Then there is a thin space
command "\," which is also very useful, e.g. to type e.\,g.
typographically correct (unfortunately, I had the time to read
typographic books recently ;-).

O.K., I can use ERT for this (and I do), but of course an inset (with a
shortcut) would be _much_ better.
BTW: will the forthcoming ERT-inset replace any Evil Red Text? I think
with small commands (especially within words) as "\," or "\/" (no
kerning) this is not really reader-friendly (sorry, if this is even
more old ground).

Thank you and greets,
Jürgen
