The LyX community has a lot to be proud about.
I, for one, was particularly impressed by the honest self-criticism
shown by the movement back to 1.0.4 (if I recall correctly) from a
development version that had gone down too ambitious a path, in favor
of incremental improvements. That took a level-headedness and maturity
otherwise utterly unknown to the world of open source, IMHO.
I was reminded of this when a recent posting on this list suggested that
no "serious" mathematics editing should be done on a 1.1.6 vintage LyX.
I recently returned to last year's 1.1.5fix2 for an important,
mathematics-intensive project, finding to my great relief predictability
and stability that's been sorely lacking in the era of 1.1.6.
I know that 1.1.6 has many ambitious efforts contained within ... the
new insets, the revamped menubars and "folder" like menus, toolkit
independence and more. And that no one has necessarily claimed that
predictibility and stability is the #1 goal for the near term.
However, as we approach the 2nd half of 2001, one might ask whether
there is an end in site, a point at which 1.1.6 will be intended as a
release worthy to succeed 1.1.5fix in all respects? Has there been
any loss of momentum? Is it possible that this is becoming another
development path that has bitten off more than it can chew? Just my 2
cents.
