There is some mention in the CGI.pm perl module about this (the -no_xhtml
flag came about because of it).
Just create an XHTML page and try to view it with IE4 and you will see.
The browser will just show you the source and not try to render it.
I don't know what causes it other than that the browser is stupid! ;-)
