I am - sort of...

Well, previoulsy there was no way to add a new equation when you were inside 
an embedded matrix.

Now, C-Return always adda an equation, and M-m w * / M-m c * always acts on
the innermost matrix enclosing the cursor. I think this is more consistent.
But it can be changed easily.

Maybe you are right and I should try to mimic old behaviour as close a
possible...

Ah. I see. I always had only a single \binom in my test files and this
rendered ok.
