Since I do access it often, I am personally not too fond of having it

I also think some external programs (bibliography managers) have the
path to the personal directory (lyxpipes) stored (although this is
probably customizable in those apps, it will break the workflow).
I agree with Juergen that the gain is dubious, but there is a non
negligible price to pay.
