Missing word here? It'd be good to be able to reproduce this crash, even

...the latex code that I pasted from wxMaxima:
\begin{pmatrix}\mathop{-}\left( {{y}^{2}}
The offending braces are there in the code you pasted. LyX just includes
them, because it doesn't try to outsmart you. I'd take them out first,
then paste.
