In the lyx-bin directory there should also exist the command "check_layout".
The use is simple:
$ check_layout /usr2/src/lyx/lyx-test/lib/layouts/powerdot.layout
(of course "usr2/src/lyx/lyx-test/lib/layouts/" is my own path)
Using
$ check_layout /usr2/src/lyx/lyx-test/lib/layouts/powerdot.layout |&
grep -i fail
I get
