Yes, but they are immensely useful. How do you do an exercise sheet in two versions, with or without answers, in MSWord? Or a Slide deck that can be turned into a properly typeset handout?

Seeing the yellow note as an "always inactive" branch seems helpful. Though I cannot help but wonder why it is more helpful than a default branch that is deactivated by default and could in principle be activated.

It is a matter of history. Indeed, we could make yellow notes a built-in branch, and that would allow to print them on demand.

One difference I noted is that branches have a strange indentation at the beginning. But I seem to remember that this is a bug rather than a feature.

A bug indeed.
