Isn't the appearance of the corners around the formula enough to signal
that it is currently edited?

Alternatives:
1. Include tow different color preferences: one for cursor in text and
another for cursor in math.
2. Make the cursor automatically take the color of text or math
according to the environment. If you prefer 1, I suggest making 2
the default.
