I can not reproduce this (CVS head + mathed63.diff)
Does it crash immediately after the \ is typed? If so, it is probably due
to the math cursor getting invalid for some (unknown) reason. Since this
"feature" appeared during the time I did not work on mathed (a few weeks
ago) I believe it is not mathed's fault.
You could try to remove the line
bv->owner->getLyXFunc()->Dispatch(LFUN_MESSAGE, _("TeX mode"));
around line 1200 in mathed/formula.C.

You should not use any CVS version after February 2001 for any serious work
with maths anyway...
