It would be nice to hear from Jürgen Womser-Schütz on their thoughts. Jürgen (Womser-Schütz), what is your specific use case? Is using a branch a reasonable way to achieve a workflow that addresses it? If not, would creating empty .lyx files for the child documents work? I imagine it is not ideal, but as you can see in this thread I am stubborn about the difference between a warning and an error. Nonetheless, I hope we can find something that addresses your workflow.
