Just a user's argument to this topic...

I always _loved_ the "open" and "close all footnotes"-function and used 
it a lot. 
In the human sciences, people (unfortunately) tend to use a lot of long 
footnotes (sometimes footnotes take more place than the main text!). 
If you want to concentrate on the main text, long footnotes are as 
confusing as figures. 
So I find it a good option to switch all footnotes (and figures) away 
to concentrate on the main text and open it again to have the whole 
context (this is real "Document Processing" ;-)
Of course you can open and close each and every single footnote. But 
with >500 footnotes in a text (this is the case in my master thesis) a 
general open/ close function is very welcome, as you may understand.
