I can't reproduce. Also ubuntu groovy 20.10, qt 5.14.2. However, after 
experimenting I do see something strange if I do the following:

1. open advanced find pane.
2. enter text into "find" and also "replace".
3. close the advanced find pane.
4. open advanced find pane.

After this sequence, the "replace" workarea is grey, just like the "past the 
end" of a LyX work area. However, when I click on the "replace" workarea, it 
then looks and behaves as expected.
