What do you mean with 'complete distribution'?
All I did was
$ kpsewhich polyglossia.sty
--> /usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/tex/latex/polyglossia/polyglossia.sty
$ cd ~/polyglossia
$ git pull
$ cd /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex
$ ln -s ~/polyglossia/tex polyglossia
$ mktexlsr
$ kpsewhich polyglossia.sty
--> /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/polyglossia/polyglossia.sty
