Depending on the style, it is impossible to guess. Some styles require
to spell out all authors.

The only reliable solution is to count in the output. I have setup an
own converter PDF4->PDFc that processes the PDF with pdftotext and wc
and outputs the result in an external dialog (vie zenity). See attached
bash script. This gives somewhat reliable results.
