I remember that some people complained because of delays when symlinks
point to removable media or "the cloud". So there might be no "one setting
fits all" approach.
Very good point indeed. But these directories come from the list
provided by kpsewhich. And anyway we are supposed to make a list of all
files pointed to by the TeX settings. Question is: wouldn't people who
put stale network directories in there have other problems in their day
use of TeX?
