According to Wikipedia there is a difference between:

^X      Traditional caret notation

⌃X      Classic Mac OS and macOS notation, used in menus and Sticky
Keys (similar to caret notation, but using U+2303 ⌃ UP ARROWHEAD
instead of a caret)
