Stephan, thank you. I downloaded it last night and it worked for normal stuff well on the laptop. I have now removed the SHared LyX directory and run tex2lyx which works without issues.
hunspell 1.3.0 comes with LyX. hunspell 1.6.0 can be installed with homebrew. If both versions are there I think it should take the newer. I'll have a look at trac.
