The markers require some pixel space (1+1) when the \beta is inside a
InsetScript. When there is spacing around the symbol (try
$\alpha+\beta$), then this is used for the extra pixels.
But in some cases it is not possible.
An alternative solution would be to draw the marker inside the normal
box, but they could overwrite the character.
Is this behavior annoying or are you just curious?
