The results of the poll are as follows

1   Digital C++ V6.1            // [1]
1   Sun CC 6.0                  // [1]
1   g++ 2.7.3                   // [2]
2   2.8.1
5   2.91.66+
19  2.95.2+
6   2.96+
2   .rpm RedHat
2   .rpm SuSE
1   .rpm unspecified
1 unspecified but "willing to upgrade"

I hope that I did not miss anybodys reply. If someone uses several
compilers for the same architecture, I counted the "best", on different
architectures everything got counted.

[1] I don't know whether these compilers can use namespaces, so maybe
someone could enlighten me.

[2] This is a hand tuned production machine but possibly "fixable" with
precompiled binaries.

This means we have 80% using 2.95.2 (or better) and 92% using 2.91.66 (or
better) on the g++ side. I'll try to find out how the 2.8.1 people are
doing. If they could upgrade I don't see any real obstacle to require at
least 2.91.66.
