I think that we can have a compromise if we ask developers to test the result of the lyx2lyx patches on the lyx documents. If we assume that we are creating format N then it would be something like: 1) create a temporary directory and copy all the lyx documentation to there; 2) update all documents there to format N-1; 3) update all documents to format N and compare the differences with format N-1, noticing if there are any anomalies. Eventually this can be automated and placed as a target for our build system(s). Last month I did that for the existing format changes for the development branch. What do you think?
