It might be, but I'm not sure. Sometimes there are minor
incompatibilities between packages (e.g. 'lyx-common' from default
repos containing icons that the PPA packages contain in 'lyx', though
I speak from memory), in which case it's indeed a good idea to first
remove the Ubuntu lyx packages and then install the PPA ones. Either
way, I don't think this additional step is much of an issue, and if
you don't you'll fix your system quickly enough in any case.
