I think if you specify a backup directory in the paths preferences they
will go there. You could give e.g. /tmp if you were daring enough. Would
that make your camping any more enjoyable?
Yes, but it feels weird to have to jump though hoops to avoid a user
friendly feature. I can almost hear Clippy say "here, I saved that file
for you with a nice name so that you cannot miss it" :)
