I would like that as well. The differencws betwen .po files and .svgz files 
is that .po files are already text (only treated inconsistenly currently in 
git), and .svgz files would need support in the build system. Also, a 
disadvantage in case of .svgz files would be that we would not use the 
compressed versions if LyX is started from the build directory, so they 
would not be tested.
