I see. This makes sense. I thought I was addressing the case that a
package mangaer on a Linux distribution would choose to use the
monolithic build, but I guess they would not even use "make dist" to do
that. Note to future self: it is also interesting to note that
"distcheck" (which is what I was testing) is not a "standard target",
although "dist" is:

I think you really did this because you wanted me to stop complaining
