On my Mac LyX is using 100% CPU for about 35 seconds to fill the symbols
grid with and without the patch. Perhaps it’s a little bit faster with 
the patch. It didn’t crash.

I’m able to build with 4.8.6, 5.4.2, 5.5.1 and 5.6.0(-rc).

To be honest I don’t know the answer for this.
