Guillaume has provided a simple patch that uses align (instead of
eqnarray) by default if amsmath is set to auto in the options. Thus,
only if amsmath is explicitly set to never load will eqnarray be used.

The patch is here:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/attachment/ticket/2543/0001-Use-AMS-align-instead-of-eqnarray-on-newline-insert-.patch

I have tested the patch and it works well.

Do we agree the change is desirable? If so, is it too late to change the
documentation before sending to translators? Currently we have:

In LyX multiline formulas are created by pressing Ctrl+Return inside a
formula. This creates either an eqnarray environment that is described
in [subsec:Eqnarray-Environment] or, when the option Use AMS math
package in the document settings is selected, an align environment that
is described in [subsec:Standard-align-Environment]. The align
environment is recommended because it provides in any case a
typographically correct output.

It seems to me we need to update that paragraph anyways to reflect the
new Math options dialog.

Any thoughts?
