Your previous suggestion to run lyx -dbg font was enough for
me to track the problem down myself. Thank you for your
help. For whatever reason, my urw-symbol font only has
digits in it! (when viewed by xfontsel) I have removed this
font from my system and am using abisource symbol
instead. This works fine.
Thanks for your help. Not a LyX bug at all, just that my
machine is configured strangely.
One unrelated comment. New LyX automatically uses the babel
package. I found that many of the packages I use are
incompatible with babel. It took me a while to figure out
that I can delete the \usepackage{babel} from the
language panel, and just leave it blank. You might include a
comment to this nature somewhere where people who are
upgrading LyX will see it.
