For the simple case of adding a new style to an existing layout file we already have a mechanism that allows us to do such changes without increasing the file format number (see section 2.4 of Development.lyx). Apart from that the answer is "it won't be possible" => the file format can not be frozen for 1-2 years. I have some vague ideas how this could be handled (including a bit of forward compatibility), but this will definitely not be trivial, and will need a lot of discussion if we decide to move towards continous delivery. > Having multiple layout files does not help since one might find a bug in > a layout file that would require a lyx2lyx conversion.
