You forget one thing in your xml discussion:
The importance of exchanging documents coupled with a way to agree on
what the contents of these documents actually mean.
Take a simple table as an example - the table format already is in XML,
so what do you need to load a gnumeric spreadsheat in LyX.... I havent
tried it actually but I/m pretty sure it'll work with a minimum of
effort.
MathML slowly becoming a standard for Math on the web is another
argument for XML. The clean seperation of the data from its depiction
with almost arbitrary backends ought to be very appealing to LyXers...
The possibilities are infinite...
