that did it. I typed "gmake" rather than "make", and it's been
compiling for an hour now (it's only a pentium).
I noted that in the ports collection Makefile, there's a line
USE_GMAKE= yes
should/could configure be modified to handle this for systmes that
use other makes by default, but that can switch over midstream?
