(The "failing" example compiles fine on my PC (with TeXLive).) * it would be interesting to know, whether the original problem (a MikTeX autoinstall bug that triggers automatic download of the grtimes package even if the actual fonts are missing) still exists in an up-to-date MikTeX system. However, the current workaround in LyX is (just like the MikTeX behaviour that it tries to work around) in line with the Windows philosophy of being helpful (and invariably getting in the way). -- comment 12 Comment 16 says (I hope there aren't alternative approaches to Greek times which we break with this). but there are. Comment 17 goes on: I don't think so. The workaround is only used when you choose "Times Roman" in the GUI, but you are still free to manually load any font package you like. My problem with this is, that while with the current hack LyX works out of the box for users with a broken system while it requires finding this bug report and working around the workaround for users on non-broken systems if they want to find out while their choice of Greek Times-compatible fonts does not work! >> Therefore, I ask for permission to revert the change. > Enrico? > I guess my main question would be how widely available substitutefont > is, and whether it conflicts with any other packages we use. The substitutefont package is available at CTAN since 2012-04-30 and included in TeXLive and MikTeX http://www.ctan.org/pkg/substitutefont Even more, substitutefont is just a convenience package, setting up font substitutions is a standard procedure in LaTeX2e and can be done in many other ways - all hampered by this ugly LyX hack. But mind, as there is not a single "golden bullet" solution to the original problem, I would leave it as a "wontfix" or "later", refering the OP to one of the many "user preamble workarounds". A proper fix would require a separate GUI setting for non-Latin scripts (Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew, and may be others). Günter
