The answer is in your question : is Debian comparable to your own Linux distribution? Since you are not supposed to know about what linux/macos/texlive do, you ask, wait for a few days for an answer, and then decide what to do.
My personal rule of thumb is: if I find something that I think is wrong but does not make sense to me, I start by being very suspicious. I ask around until I am satisfied that my intuition was not wrong.
