Boldsymbol might not be perfect but mathbf does definitely nothing
correctly. So why do you prefer mathbf?
It is very common for mathematicians to use upright bold for vectors,
for example (see sections 9.2 and 9.3 of amsldoc, for example). Of
course other fields may use italic bold and others will use an arrow.
This cannot be solved better since boldsymbol is already the best
available LaTeX solution.
There is \bm too. But from what I understand there not reasonable solution.
