My patch uses these mechanisms in fact. The reason we don't just get
these working entirely properly is the inconvenience. It is impossible
to sensibly support "transform-name" for example, given that we install
reLyX etc. Even if it worked, as JMarc points out, the datadir wouldn't
work properly.
With the patch it's one option with an obvious meaning (we don't expect
people to know how to use sed :)
