I did apply the patch and it seems to work good. I'll commit this as
I see that it simplifies the code and that is neccessary if we later
go for an speed optimizing.

P.S.: How is the commit policy? Can I just commit it as always or do
I have to make a branch (IMO a branch is just worthless for bug-fixes
and code enhancement without new stuff).
