Can you please remove this feature that you cannot install LyX if the
installer thinks it is already installed ?
This was once added by user request. The idea and consensus was that one can install e.g. 2.0.7 over
LyX 1.5.x until 2.0.6 but not over LyX 2.0.7 itself. This avoids problems with the installation and
the feature is in since an installer for 1.6.x.
First, the messagebox is so clumsy. Second, if you're wrong the user is
left without options. Third, I have no idea why I couldn't just overwrite
the previous install
If you have 2.1rc1 installed why do you want to overwrite this with another LyX
2.1rc1?
Now, I deleted the uninstaller.
Why? When you manually delete a file the un/installer can of course fail.
Conclusion I can never install LyX again ?
No, you can delete LyX's install folder and run a registry cleaner:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
(free and very powerful)
that automatically deletes all entries of LyX because LyX does no longer exists.
(Or you remove the LyX registry entries manually.)
Alternatively reinstall LyX 2.0.x and then you should be able to install LyX 2.1RC1. But note that
then your LyX 2.1 settings might be corrupted. (There are reasons why installing the same version
over itself was once disabled.)
I removed the install dir. No luck. I removed the registry entry. No luck.
So, I have to be a computer expert to use LyX ever again ?
You are the first ever reporting such a problem. Perhaps you are also suffering here from the 1024
char limit. Or was this a hypothetic question or did not really delete the uninstaller?
In every case, it is somewhat impossible to assure a clean uninstallation when you manually delete
files from the LyX installation folder. This applies not only for LyX. The registry was invented as
database for programs to find information at any case and an access to LyX's settings is the
uninstaller.
