Do you mean a native LyX file format which would be the primary format, or an auxiliary format for interfacing with external tools? The native file format would need to be non-static and would need format changes as LyX develops (so would face similar problems to external tools as current .lyx), and an intermediate static format would face similar problems regarding new features as current lyx2lyx when converting into an older format. In both cases I don't see how the "format change" problem could be solved. Georg
