These two issues are probably related. I cannot reproduce on Ubuntu. I'm guessing that you do not have platex installed. Can you confirm this? If so, would you mind installing it? See here: http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Japanese although the information there seems out of date. It would be nice if you were able to export Japanese documents so that you can confirm that they still compile after an edit. But if it is too much trouble, we will have to come up with a different solution. Thanks for taking a look. Scott
