As you said your experience with LyX is quite limited, I'd say your best
starting point is becoming a user: take any random excuse to use LyX instead
of plain latex (or whatever else) to write, then start thinking of what YOU
would like to change in order to improve the tool.

As a developer, your best starting point may be our bug tracker

trying to address those bugs tagged as easyfix. This kind of "treasure hunt"
might help you in familiarizing with the source code and getting familiar
with its general structure.

If you ask me, the Advanced Find and Replace is of course a feature I'd
love to see evolving and improving, though I think before diving into that
it is necessary a bit of preliminary sightseeing work...
