If I understand correctly the result of this thread no one understands
InsetBox today and the code became so dark that even experienced
devs are unable to fix the problems there.
I would ask whether this is the situation when we should stop to add
any new features like \mbox and \fbox and add next layer of chaotic
code.
I am confident that I will eventually fix the problems Uwe is seeing. I
just need some time to do it. But indeed InsetBox would benefit from a
spring cleanup.
