OK, I was wrong (which is of course good!). Complex presentations such as the one shipped with beamer [1] are not imported correctly (i.e. they do not compile), but the basic things seem to work (and even better maybe than in branch: the mentioned presentation puts branch into an infinite loop when I try to import it). Certainly, there is much room for improvement, but there is no regression AFAICS.
