A layout file that does not work with the current version of the related LaTeX class/package is broken. A possible fix would be to indicate the fact by, e.g., a version number in its name. I agree that the responsible part is in the first place the LaTeX class itself - introducing incompatible changes in a LaTeX class without renaming is asking for trouble. Günter
